Where can you find ticks?
Ticks are common in woodland, grassland and heath areas, but can also be found in your garden if you live in an area with lots of wildlife. You are most likely to come across them in areas with lots of deer or sheep.
When are ticks more likely to be around?
You are most likely to come across ticks between spring and autumn, but they are active throughout the year.

Ticks can transfer blood-borne disease and it is important to remove a tick promptly if you find one attached to a dog.
First Aid Action
Wet the fur so you can see the tick clearly. Insert a tick hook between the tick and the skin, twist and pull. Alternatively use a pair of tweezers but be certain to grasp the tick where the mouthparts meet the skin or you risk leaving part in the skin. Ideally, first spray the tick with fipronil, which kills the tick and loosens its grip, prior to removal.
There may be local redness after removing the tick. Bathe the area with salt water and monitor for signs of infection.
